Awards ceremony for the eighth “Bubbles Squared” comic book competition

On The June 29, 2019

The awards ceremony for the eighth edition of the “Bubbles Squared” competition organized by the Images des mathématiques (IdM) online journal, hosted by the CNRS, will take place on Saturday June 29, 2019. This event will be held at the Maison des mathématiques et de l’informatique (MMI), as part of the “As if by Chance” exhibition.

The “Bubbles Squared” competition is open to all non-professional artists over the age of 14, and is aimed at addressing mathematics through a popular and approachable means of expression: comics.

This year, this combination of mathematics and comics was once again a success:amateur cartoonists from all over France drew a total of 139 comic strips.Participants were invited to explore the theme of chance, and all competitors showed great imagination (common expressions related to chance, games of chance, the role of chance in our daily lives, discoveries made by chance, etc.) with humor, seriousness and even emotion.

A panel of mathematicians divided the candidates into two categories: the jury prize and the youth prize. Internet users also voted for their favorite comics on the website, and thus decided on the people’s choice awards.

The winners will receive their prizes during a special awards ceremony held on Saturday, June 29, in the afternoon.

The program includes:
  • 2:30 p.m.: visit to the “As if by chance” exhibition and entertainment;
  • 3:30 p.m.: meeting and discussions with Fibretigre, Arnold Zéphir and Héloïse Chochois, authors and illustrator of the comic book “Intelligences artificielles, miroirs de nos vies” (Artificial Intelligences: Mirrors of Our Lives), published in March 2019;
  • 4:30 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.: awards ceremony and reception.
